
Bulls Drop Tight Match to St. Johns, 4-3

TAMPA (Jan. 19, 2016) – After a hard fought match, the USF women's tennis team came up just short in a 4-3 loss to St. John's on Tuesday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
After splitting the first six points of the match, the deciding point came down to the matchup of USF's Jessica Chaves (Monterrey, Mexico) and St. John's Anna Morozova on court two. The first two sets of the match each went to a tiebreak, with Chavez winning the first set 7-6 (3) and Morozova winning the second set tiebreak 7-6 (3). Chavez battled hard in the tightly contested third set, but Morozova was able to win the third set 6-3 and seal the win for St. John's.
The Bulls dropped the doubles matches to begin the afternoon down 1-0, but stormed back early in the singles matches to take a 3-1 lead. Vera Bessonova (Moscow, Russia) looked impressive on court six, dropping just two games, and winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
At the No. 3 spot, freshman Ana Roman Dominguez (Spain) also shined winning her collegiate debut 6-1, 6-2. The last USF point of the day came from Juliana Cardosa (Descalvado, Brazil) who won her match, 6-2, 6-2.
Olga Martinez (Barcelona, Spain) put in a strong effort on court one, but fell just short. Martinez forced a third set, but ultimately dropped the match 7-5 (5), 6-4, 6-1. The Bulls also received a strong effort from freshman Nicole Dzenga (Harare, Zimbabwe) who forced a first set tiebreak, but eventually fell 7-6 (5), 6-4.
The Bulls will be back in action Jan. 27th when they take on No. 3 Florida in Gainesville at 4 p.m.
