USF Welcomes 75 Freshmen Student-Athletes For Inaugural Athletics Summer Bridge Program

Freshmen student-athletes engage in six-week transition program

TAMPA, JUNE 28, 2016 – USF is welcoming 75 freshmen student-athletes to campus this summer as they begin the first-ever USF Athletics Summer Bridge Program, a six-week, comprehensive transition to campus life and the demands of being a student-athlete.

“We are very excited to welcome this new class to our beautiful campus and our academic support unit,” Associate AD for Academic Services Tim Anderson said. “We've seen strong performances in our Graduation Success Rate and Academic Progress Rate in recent years, as well as our best-ever combined term GPA for student-athletes this year. This program is a great way to ensure we get our freshmen student-athletes off on the right foot and they can build on that academic success.”

The USF Athletics Summer Bridge Program, which began June 22, serves as the catalyst for the transition of freshmen student-athletes into the University of South Florida.  The comprehensive 6-week program boasts a combination of academic coursework, structured academic support along with intentional and relevant academic skills and student-athlete development workshops.  The program aims at transitioning incoming freshmen student-athletes into the USF community and preparing them for success in their academic, social and athletic careers.

Student-athletes staying on-campus this summer moved into their summer campus dorms following orientation sessions last Thursday.

During orientation, incoming student-athletes got familiarized with key campus offices and resources, Athletics' Academic Services and Student-Athlete Enhancement units and available Behavioral Health Services. They also met with members of USF's Sports Medicine and Compliance units and heard from USF Director of Athletics Mark Harlan. Some fun was also had with a campus scavenger hunt designed to familiarize them with USF's campus and academic and student services buildings.
