Sanchez named to Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

TAMPA, JULY 18, 2017 – Senior linebacker Auggie Sanchez (St. Petersburg) has been named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, marking the Bay Area native's second national award watch list and bringing USF's total to eight Bulls on 10 national award watch lists.

Sanchez, a two-time, second team all-conference selection, has also been named to the Nagurski Award, which honors college football's most outstanding defensive player.

The Wuerffel Trophy is presented annually to the college football player "who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement."[1] The trophy is named in honor of former University of Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel. The National College Football Awards will continue announcements of preseason candidates for national recognition in college football next week.

USF is now represented on 10 national award watch lists by eight players: senior quarterback Quinton Flowers (Maxwell), senior punter Jonathan Hernandez (Ray Guy), senior running back D'Ernest Johson (Hornung), senior cornerback Deatrick Nichols (Bednarik, Nagurski & Thorpe), senior center Cameron Ruff (Rimington), senior linebacker Auggie Sanchez (Nagurski & Wuerffel), senior defensive lineman Deadrin Senat (Nagurski & Outland) and sophomore tight end Mitchell Wilcox (Mackey).

Sanchez, who graduated with a 3.5 grade-point average in communications and is pursuing a master's degree, brings 303 career tackles into his senior season, which rank second among all returners nationally and stand sixth all-time at USF, 64 away from the career record. He has started every game at linebacker over the last three seasons and is the quarterback of the Bulls' defense. Sanchez posted more than 100 tackles in consecutive seasons and his 120 tackles in 2016 rank second on USF's all-time season list, just one off the record. He led USF with a career-best 6.0 sacks and ranked second on the team with 8.5 tackles for loss to go along with an interception, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and three pass breakups last year. Sanchez led the team in tackles in six games last season and has done so 15 times on his career with 12 double-digit tackle games.
