TAMPA (Aug. 19, 2017) — The University of South Florida women's soccer program will finish off its opening weekend with a match against American on Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans can bring their church bulletins for discounted tickets and food. 
 
Friday night, the Bulls opened the regular season with an overtime thriller that would end with a golden-goal by sophomore-standout Evelyne Viens (L'ancienne-Lorette, Canada) that gave USF its first victory of the season.
 
The 49ers would score fast and early with two goals in the top nine minutes of the match, but the Bulls were relentless, even to the very last minute of the game. Viens led USF's comeback when she put the Bulls on the board in the 55th minute. Freshman Sabrina Wagner (New Port Ritchey, Fla.) kept USF alive with a game-tying goal in the 90th minute, sending them to overtime. Viens ended the game in the 102nd minute when she scored off a pass from freshman Sarah Harrison (Riverview, Fla.).
 
The Opponent
American fell to Stetson, 3-0, in its first match of the season Friday afternoon in a neutral match at Corbett Satdium. The Eagles battled, but were unable to hold off the Hatters who outshot American 20-4.
 
Notables
  • Wagner had her first-career goal as a Bull Friday night.  
  • Freshman Sarah Harrison and sophomores Yasmine Hall and Brianna Blethen were all credited with assists in Friday's game.
  • The Bulls defense held Charlotte to just seven shots, while USF tallied 24.
