Women's Soccer Travels to Alabama for First Road Test
The 2-0 Bulls will take on Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Thursday evening.
TAMPA (Aug. 23, 2017) — The University of South Florida women's soccer team is hitting the road for the first time the season, to take on Alabama on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET. The match will be broadcasted live on SEC Network +.
Last week, USF opened its regular season with a pair of home matches against Charlotte and American. The Bulls struggled early against Charlotte, but a last-minute goal by freshman
Sabrina Wagner (New Port Ritchey, Fla.) would give the USF a chance in overtime, when American Offensive Player of the Week
Evelyne Viens (L'ancienne-Lorette, Canada) gave USF a golden-goal victory in the 102
nd minute.
Three Bulls had a chance to score in Sunday's shutout win over American. Redshirt freshman
Kylee Burroughs scored her first-career goal with a header on an assist from
Andrea Hauksdottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) and Wagner in the 25
th minute. Hauksdottir would convert a penalty kick in the 34
th minute, and sophomore
Aubrey Megrath (West Palm Beach, Fla.) sent a quick pass to Viens, who immediately turned to score in the third and final goal of the night.
The Opponent
Alabama went 9-8-2 during the 2016 season, finishing ninth in the SEC, and appearing the conference tournament for the first time since 2014. In his third year as head coach, Wes Hart returns 17 players, and welcomes 13 newcomers. Among the returners is leading goal-scorer from 2016, Abbie Boswell (Woodridge, Ill.), who posted four goals, two assists and 10 points in 2016.
USF and Alabama first met last season in Tampa, when No. 20 USF shut out the Crimson Tide, 1-0. Alabama held the Bulls scoreless for 77 minutes until Andrea Huaksdottir played an assist from
Trudi Carter, giving the Bulls the 1-0 victory. The win against Alabama was the fifth straight for USF in last year's eight-straight streak.
This season, Alabama is 2-0 after wins over Jacksonville State and Samford. The Crimson Tide defeated Jacksonville State, 5-1, and Samford, 2-1.

The USF women's soccer team has posted five consecutive seasons of 10-plus wins and six in the last seven years under head coach Denise Schilte-Brown. Schilte-Brown reached her 100th win with USF last season, and will begin her eleventh season as head coach in 2017. The Bulls made their first NCAA tournament appearance in 2010 and returned in 2014 & 2015.
