USF Draws No. 8 Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky., SEPT. 26, 2017 – The University of South Florida men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw Tuesday night at No. 8 Louisville. Freshman Josue Monge scored the equalizer meanwhile Christian Knight turned in a career best eight saves at Lynn Stadium.
 
Monge (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored in the 55th minute to tie the match at 1-1. Avionne Flanagan (Baltimore, Md.) passed from the end line and Monge finished to the right side of the net. It was Monge's first career goal.
 
Christian Knight (Odessa, Fla.) turned in a career night with eight saves in 110 minutes of action and improved his record to 3-0-1 this season. Knight made four saves in the second half to send the Bulls into overtime.
 
USF (4-3-1) was the first team to score on the Cardinals (6-1-2) since Sept. 15. The Bulls also held Louisville without a shot for 20 of the last 30 minutes of regulation.

KEY STAT:
8-4: Knight's career night proved to be the difference in Tuesday's game. Knight's eight saves outnumbered Lousiville's Will Meyer's four saves in the Cardinal goal keeper's first career start.
 
NOTABLES: 
  • The Bulls were the first team to score on Louisville since No. 7 Syracuse Sept. 15.
  • USF has played in back-to-back double overtime regular season matches for the first time since the beginning of the 2016 season. The Bulls played to back-to-back draw against Michigan (Aug. 26) and American (Aug. 29).
  •  Nine players have scored the Bulls' 15 goals this season.

USF returns home Saturday, Sept. 30 for an American Athletic Conference match against Cincinnati at 7 p.m.
 
On Dec. 18 Bob Butehorn was appointed the head coach the USF men's soccer program. A member of the University of Tampa's 1981 national championship team and a three-time conference coach of the year, Butehorn previously led Florida Gulf Coast University's men's soccer program to six conference regular season championships, four NCAA Tournament appearances and Top 25 rankings in five seasons since 2010.
 
The Bulls concluded the season as The American regular season champions and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The Bulls finished the season with a 10-6-4 overall record and a 6-1-0 mark in the American Athletic Conference.
