Three Bulls Score in 3-1 Win Over Memphis
TAMPA (Sept. 28, 2017)
— The USF women's soccer team (6-3-1, 2-1-0 The American) utilized a fourth minute goal from sophomore forward
Aubrey Megrath (West Palm Beach, Fla.) to go ahead early and never trail in a 3-1 win over Memphis (7-4-1, 1-1-1) on Thursday night.
Four minutes in, Megrath corralled a loose ball off a save and chipped it over the goalkeeper's head for a 1-0 advantage.
Trailing by one, the Tigers put a lot of pressure on USF, but defenders
Kelli Burney (Bealton, Va.) and
Chyanne Dennis (Bradenton, Fla.) anchored the back line by making big stops, and consistently clearing Memphis out of USF territory.
In the 32
nd minute, Memphis committed a foul in the penalty box and senior defender
Grace Adams (Accra, Ghana) converted the penalty kick to put the Bulls ahead by two.
In the 80
th minute, sophomore midfielder
Andrea Hauksdottir (Kopovagur, Iceland) sent a pass from midfield up to sophomore forward
Evelyne Viens (L'Ancienne-Lorette, Canada), who bested the defense on a strike from just outside the 6-yard box.
Quotable
Head coach Denise Schilte-Brown on Megrath scoring so early…
"It was really good energy today, and that was really good for us. As the match went on, it felt like a horse race and I don't know if they would have gotten the same opportunities later on. I feel really blessed that they got that done."
Coach Schilte-Brown on Adam's penalty kick…
"Total confidence, the woman knows what she's going to do and she does it well. I don't think in her career she has missed a PK."
Coach Schilte-Brown on the defense…
"The two center backs finally have a feel for each other. One is a freshman, one is a sophomore so we knew it was going to take time. I couldn't be more excited about the way the two of them are developing together. Their cover for each other was excellent. They did their job quite well."
