USF Leads Early, but Falls to No. 14 Mississippi State

Starkville, Miss. (Jan. 19, 2018) – The USF men's tennis team (0-1) saw a hard-fought loss to No. 14 Mississippi State, 5-2, Friday afternoon.

It was a cold morning in Mississippi when Peter Bertran (Santiago, Dominican Republic) and Jakub Wojcik (Delray Beach, Fla.) started off the day by winning the doubles point after a thrilling match against #41 ranked opponents Florian Broska (Eitelborn, Germany) and Giovanni Ordini (Rovereto, Italy).

On court two, Alberto Barroso-Campos (Montijo, Spain) was matched up against #29 ranked Giovanni Ordini who was named to the All-SEC Freshman Team in 2017. Barroso-Campos battled with the sophomore to straight-set victories, 6-4, 7-5.

Senior Grayson Goldin and Junior Sean Burnette both played high-ranked players in their first match in Green and Gold. Goldin was put up against No. 3 ranked and current SEC Player of the Year Nuno Borges where he fell 6-3, 6-2. Burnette saw action on the court against No. 118 and All-SEC Second Team player Niclas Braun (Berlin, Germany).

"We lost to a very good team today in Mississippi State, and I was proud of the ways the boys competed," said head coach Ashley Fisher. "We wanted to set the tone for the season by showing we can fight unconditionally and we achieved that. We have things to work on like all teams, but if we can continue to grow as a team and improve our culture good things are going to happen."
