Bulls Fall in Conference Opener Against Tulsa
TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 21, 2018) – The USF men's tennis team heads back to Tampa after facing their first conference opponent of the season, Tulsa. The Bulls fell in a back-and-forth 5-2 loss with three out of six singles matches going to three sets.
The defending American Athletic Conference champions started off the day with the lead after clinching the doubles point in a match featuring
Peter Bertran (Santiago, Dominican Republic) and
Pierre Luquet (Draguignan, France) who won 6-4.
Heading into singles play, the Bulls were fired up with the momentum on their side, but struggled out of the gate where four Bulls lost the first set in their respective matches.
Over on court two,
Alberto Barroso-Campos (Montijo, Spain) was put up against a difficult opponent in No. 56 Majed Kilani who recently won the American's Player of the Month for October. Even though Barroso-Campos won the first set 6-4, after being down 4-2, it took all three sets for Kilani to put away the Spaniard, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Bertran was the lone victor for the Bulls today as he too went all three sets in his win over Jarod Hing (Phoenix, Arizona), 6-7, 6-2, 7-5.
Freshman
Jourdan Kast (Boca Raton, Fla.) made his USF debut in a hard-fought loss to Boriss Kamdem (Ghent, Belgium), 7-5, 6-4.
"Today was disappointing. We put ourselves in a position to take control of the match and didn't take it," said head coach
Ashley Fisher. "We also struggled with some of the ebbs and flows of the match and did not compete at the standard we expect of ourselves. I have faith that the boys will respond well and put in a great week in preparing for the next opportunity against Pepperdine on Saturday."
