USF Women’s Tennis Heads to Atlanta for ITA Kick-Off Weekend

TAMPA (January 18, 2018) – The University of South Florida women's tennis team heads to Atlanta for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, Jan. 27-28, where they will face No. 7 Georgia Tech at 11 a.m. for the opening match.
 
USF (0-2) started the season against North Texas and No. 15 South Carolina and North Texas. Freshman Evelyne Tiron (Romania) won her first career match as a Bulls against Nidhi Surapaneni of North Texas, 6-1, 7-5, in the four spot.  Nicole Dzenga (Harare, Zimbabwe) also snagged a win during the North Texas match on court six against Alexandra Heczey, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
 
The Bulls faltered against No. 15 South Carolina, but No. 97 Ana Roman Dominguez (Spain) played a strong match against No. 43 Hadley Berg (South Carolina) winning the first set, however the match was clinched before she could finish the second.
 
Against the Mean Green, the Bulls took the doubles point with Dzenga and Vanja Klaric (Serbia) defeating Nidhi Surapaneni and Minying Liang, 6-2.  Alexandria Mjos (Austin, Texas) teamed up with Roman Dominguez to defeat Alexandra Heczey and Haruka Sasaki, 6-1.
 
 
Scouting the Opponent:
Georgia Tech:
No. 7 Georgia Tech will play their first dual match of the season against the Bulls coming off a 27-5 season as ACC runner-up. The Yellow Jackets currently have three ranked players on the roster, No. 49 Paige Hourigen, No. 79 Johnnise Renaud and No. 89 Ida Jarlskog.
 
During the preseason Michigan Invitational, No. 79 Johnnise Renaud (Georgia Tech) defeated No. 74 Chiara Lommer (University of Michigan), 7-5, 6-4, on day one. Day two of the Michigan Invitational came with more victories for the Yellow Jackets with No. 89 Ida Jarlskog (Georgia Tech) defeating Ilze Hattingh (Arizona State), 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Kenya Jones (Georgia Tech) defeated Tereza Kolarova (Arizona State), 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, and Vicky Flores (Georgia Tech) topped  Savannah Slaysman (Arizona State), 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
 
University of Denver:
The Pioneers are also playing their first dual match of the season at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend as defending Summit Conference Champions.
 
Returning to the roster is No. 65 Julia O'Loughlin who won against Maja Ornberg (FGCU) in straight sets, 7-6 (4), 6-4, in the preseason FGCU Invitational to contribute to the overall win against No. 91 FGCU, 4-2, in singles.  
 
Dartmouth University:
The Big Green start its season undefeated, 2-0, with wins against Boston University and Liberty. Dartmouth's Kristina Mathis is ranked No.78, and started the 2018 season 2-0 in singles winning in straight sets against Maria Medina (Liberty), 6-3, 6-2, and Iryna Kostirko (Boston University), 6-4, 6-4.
 
In doubles, Julia Schroeder and Abigail Chiu go into this weekend undefeated as well, 2-0, on court one.

Up Next:
USF will face University of Denver or Dartmouth University on Sunday, Jan. 28 depending on Saturday's results.
