Burney, Martinez Named The American Players of the Week
TAMPA, Oct. 15, 2018 – Two Bulls were named players of the week by The American and one was named to the honor roll this week after an undefeated weekend in league play.
USF (10-2-0, 5-1-0) completed its final road trip of the regular season with a pair of wins after playing Tulsa and No. 15/18 Memphis.
Redshirt junior
Kelli Burney was named The American Defensive Player of the Week after continuing her streak of impressive performances. The defensive leader for the Bulls helped limit Tulsa to just three shots in the first half of play, and seven total. Adding to her impressive performance, the Bealeton, Va., native scored a header off a corner to give USF a 1-0 advantage in the sixth minute. Burney also helped shut out Memphis, one of the nation's top offenses, in the Bulls' shutout win on Sunday.
Freshman
Sydney Martinez (Rincon, Ga.) was named The American Goalkeeper of the Week. She was stellar over the weekend, finishing her second solo clean sheet this season when she shut out the nation's No. 2 offense, Memphis. The Tigers were ranked second, just behind USF, in scoring offense heading into the weekend but Martinez was poised and aggressive, keeping Memphis at bay. Martinez set a new career high 10 saves against the Tigers, and had two saves against Tulsa earlier in the weekend.
All-American
Evelyne Viens (Canada) was named to The American Honor Roll after scoring her fifth brace of the season. The junior striker broke the career goal record for USF women's soccer when she gave the Bulls the advantage over Memphis in the 47
th minute, and added one for good measure to double USF's lead in the 61
st minute and set the record at 43 goals and counting. Viens is just two goals away from setting a new USF record for season goals, currently set at 16 which she matched during her freshman campaign.
