Barroso-Campos Shines at ITA Southeast Regional

ATHENS, Ga., Oct. 24, 2018 – Senior Alberto Barroso-Campos won four straight matches in the ITA Southeast Regional Singles Main Draw before finishing in the semifinal round.
 
Barroso-Campos (Montijo, Spain) had straight-set wins over FGCU's Juan Montes (7-6(3), 6-2), GSU's Quentin Coulaud (6-2, 6-1), GSU's Stefano Di Aloy (6-1, 6-3) and Miami's No. 92 Bojan Jankulovski (6-4, 6-4). Barroso-Campos battled the would-be champion, No. 22 Jan Zielinski from the University of Georgia in the semifinals. After a loss in the first set, Barroso-Campos battled to a second-set tiebreak, but ultimately fell, 6-3, 7-6(1).
 
Three more Bulls, including two freshmen, recorded wins during the singles main draw on Saturday. Freshmen Sergio Gomez Montesa (Valencia, Spain) and Ivan Yatsuk (Minsk, Belarus) each posted wins over opponents from other Florida schools. Gomez Montesa defeated Manoel Alencar (UCF), 7-6, 6-1, and Yatsk defeated Till Von Winning (UNF), 6-2, 7-6 (4). Junior Pierre Luquet (Draguignan, France) also advanced in the singles main draw after defeating Vasyl Kiselyov (UCF), 6-3, 6-3.
 
In doubles, Sean Burnette (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Tobias Sonne (Buenos Aires, Argentina) defeated Georgia State's Steven Huynh and Patrick Lazo, 8-3. Barroso-Campos teamed up with junior Jakub Wojcik (Delray Beach, Fla.) in doubles and started the tournament with a bye in the round of 64. In the round of 32 the pair advanced when Andrew Li and Zummy Bauer from Georgia Tech retired due to injury after playing to 4-1.
