Klaric and Pellicer Perello Win Singles Championships at Roberta Alison Classic
TAMPA, Oct. 29, 2018- The USF women's tennis team was split over the weekend as it competed in both the Roberta Alison Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. and the FineMark/FGCU Collegiate Open in Fort Myers, Fla.
Senior
Vanja Klaric (Gaborone, Botswana) demonstrated her skills for the Bulls as she was dominant throughout the Roberta Alison Classic en route to her singles championship performance. In the quarterfinals, Klaric first defeated Clemson's Tate Schroeder, 6-2, 6-1. Klaric advanced to the semifinals where she battled to victory in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5). The Susan Carver singles draw championship saw Klaric defeat Clemson's Sydney Riley, 6-3, 6-3.
Another victorious Bull was freshman
Laura Pellicer Perello (Valencia, Spain), who recorded the Ashley Bentley singles draw championship win. Pellicer Perello held off WMU's Femke Tjov-A Joe in the quarterfinals, 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-8), before defeating Indiana's Michelle McKamey, 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinal match. The finals round concluded with Pellicer Perello defeating Memphis' Lina Hornhold, 6-1, 6-4.
Junior
Janvhi Clark (Tauranga, New Zealand) also made it to the Lori Smith singles draw championship match, but fell short, 6-0, 6-4, to Nadeen Lieberman (Air Force). Clark defeated Samford's Holly Horsfall in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-2, and advanced with a semifinal win over Troy's Celia Montero Estevan, 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles, Pellicer Perello and Clark were victorious in the consolation semifinal round over a pair from Air Force, 6-1.
During the FineMark/FGCU Collegiate Open the Bulls recorded two singles victories on Friday from sophomore
Alexandria Mjos (Austin, Texas) and freshman
Selin Yaylali (Gainesville, Fla.). Mjos defeated Princeton's Nathalie Rodilosso, 6-2, in straight sets while Yaylali was victorious over Princeton's Cata Vives, 7-5, 6-0. On Saturday, Yaylali recorded a singles win over Purdue's Caitlin Calkins, 6-2, 6-4.
