Bulls Welcome Maria Alvarez to Class of 2019

TAMPA, NOV. 14, 2018 –USF women's basketball has received a National Letter of Intent from Maria Alvarez from Bal Harbor, Fla., to join the program in 2019.

Alvarez, a 5-foot-7 guard out of Miami Country Day, has acquired numerous accolades during her high school career, with honors such as a two-time Dick's Sporting Goods High School National Title champion. She was also named to the FABC second-team 3A All-State in 2016.

"We are so excited for Maria Alvarez to officially join our Bulls family," head coach Jose Fernandez said. "She committed to us in the spring and she fits everything we do here on and off of the basketball court. I think she will have the opportunity to make an immediate impact in our program."

Alvarez led Miami Country Day to five state championships, and averaged 10.2 points per game and 3.3 rebounds per game in 2017-18 as a junior.

Born and raised in Miami, her parents' Colombian nationality allowed her to represent Colombia in the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup in summer 2018. In her FIBA debut, she set a new record by hitting 10 three-pointers and scoring an impressive 35 points. At the World Cup, Alvarez averaged 16 points, 3 rebounds, and one assist.

Alvarez is the first signee to Jose Fernandez's 2019 signing class. USF's last state of Florida signee, Tamara Henshaw, was named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 2016-17 and is in her junior season for the Bulls.
