USF Beats Memphis, 4-1, on Home Courts

TAMPA, March 9, 2018 —The USF women's tennis team continued its strong recent play Friday, downing Memphis, 4-1, at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts for its third straight victory.

More than 200 fans watched as Jessica Cortes Chaves (Monterrey, Mexico) clinched the match for the Bulls (5-7) with a victory in No. 1 singles over the Tigers' Anki Wind. After losing her first set, Cortes Chaves, who was moved up to No. 1 singles by head coach Christina Moros on the day, turned it on in the final two sets for a 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory.

The Bulls' No. 1 doubles team of Juliana Cardoso (Descalvado, Brazil) and Cortes Chaves won their match, 6-1, to start doubles play. The Bulls' No. 3 doubles team of Ana Roman Dominguez (Spain) and Alexandria Mjos (Austin, Texas) clinched the doubles point for USF with a 6-3 victory to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead going into singles action.

Nicole Dzenga (Harare, Zimbabwe) got USF started quickly in singles by giving up only one game to her opponent in a straight-set, 6-0, 6-1, victory in No. 5 singles. Shortly after, Evelyne Tiron (Romania) also defeated her opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.

Roman Dominguez and Vanja Klaric (Serbia) both won their opening sets in singles on courts two and four respectively, but saw their matches ended unfinished after the Bulls clinched the match.

Dzenga and Klaric also teamed up in No. 2 doubles and held a 5-4 lead before the Bulls clinched the doubles point and that match was suspended.

Quotable:

Head coach Cristina Moros on the win…
"That was deceivingly really tough today. They're a good team, and they fought really hard today. I thought it really helped that we took care of the doubles. I think that was our best doubles we've played all year, and I think that definitely helped. Credit to Jess [Jessica Cortes Chaves]. We moved her up to one today, and she showed why she's a competitor."
