Viens’ Goal and Two Assists Lift USF to 3-1 Victory over No. 17 Baylor
August 24, 2018 | Women's Soccer
TAMPA, Fla., AUG. 24, 2018 – USF women's soccer's Evelyne Viens had a foot in each of USF's three goals to overpower No. 17/20 Baylor on Friday night, 3-1.
After the second straight rain delay at Corbett stadium, USF took the pitch nearly two hours behind schedule, but the Bulls didn't waste any time. All-American Viens (L'ancienne-Lorette, Quebec, Canada) was eager to get moving taking a shot less than two minutes into the game that went blocked by the Baylor defense.
The first half of the match was highlighted by two goals that came within four minutes, as both Brianna Blethen (Bradenton, Fla.) and Emma Davies (St. Catherine's, Ontario, Canada) netted their first career NCAA goals to put USF ahead 2-0 leading into the half. Viens had an assist on both goals.
Junior Blethen capitalized on momentum inside the box when midfielder Andrea Hauksdottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) served in a corner that was received by Viens. Viens was able to get a foot on the ball and send it to Blethen who took the shot from inside the box in the 37th minute.
In the 41st minute Davies picked up a pass from Viens who fought past three defenders. Davies struck the ball hard on the ground to the left of the goalkeeper for the second goal of the evening.
The Bulls took a 3-0 lead when sophomores Leah Ferlin (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Katie Kitching (Bedale, England) worked together to set up USF's Canadian forward Viens. She took a pass from Kitching, and found the back of the net with her seventh shot of the night in the 49th minute.
The Bulls' defense also had a productive night, blocking six shots from Baylor. Freshman goalkeeper Sydney Martinez (Rincon, Ga.) completed the night with six saves for a career high.
