Bull Speed Ahead Podcast: Episode 3




TAMPA, SEPT. 13, 2018 – In the midst of USF Athletics having lots of fall sport success, USF Vice President of Athletics Michael Kelly sits down with USF radio host Darek Sharp to cover a number of important program topics during Kelly's third Bull Speed Ahead podcast.
  • PERFECT WEEKEND FOR BULLS: Kelly applauds four USF teams for combining to post a 7-0 record last weekend. USF's perfect run included three victories by the Bulls' 8-1 volleyball team, which is off to its best start since the 1996 season.
  • 27799BIG WIN FOR 2-0 FOOTBALL: Kelly talks about AAC Special Teams Player of the Week Terrence Horne Jr.'s "unbelievable" record-setting performance in the win over Georgia Tech that included two kick returns for touchdowns from 98 and 97 yards out, which tied an NCAA record. Horne set new USF, conference records with 264 kickoff return yards and added a touchdown catch in the second half. Kelly also comments on resiliency shown on national television by Coach Strong's 2-0 team, which erased a 10-point fourth quarter deficit with 21 unanswered points in front of loud student section at Raymond James Stadium.
  • EXTRA YARD FOR TEACHERS GAME: Kelly looks ahead to USF football's next home game against East Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. USF's conference opener will feature fun activities associated with Extra Yard for Teachers Week that will honor Bay Area school employees.
  • SENIOR LEADERSHIP TEAM ADDITIONS: Kelly touches on Lelo Prado's return to the program as Deputy Director of Athletics/Development and the addition of Brandon Hall as Senior Associate Athletic Director/Chief Financial Officer. Learn more HERE.
  • KELLY HONORS DR. GENSHAFT: Kelly pays tribute to USF System President Judy Genshaft, who announced on Monday her decision to step down from her position, effective July 1, 2019. 
  • 27835WOMEN'S SOCCER INTERVIEW: Kelly uses the final portion of his podcast to interview women's soccer head coach Denise Schilte-Brown and star scorer Evelyne Viens. USF women's soccer (4-1) has moved up to No. 19 in the United Soccer Coaches rankings. Viens, a junior striker from Canada, ranks in the top 10 nationally in three categories, including No. 4 in points per game (2.60), No. 5 in goals per game (1), and No. 8 in shots per game (5).

About USF Athletics
USF Athletics sponsors 19 varsity men's and women's teams that compete in 11 different sports, 18 at the NCAA Division I level in the American Athletic Conference. The Bulls' athletic program celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015, having begun with a men's soccer contest in 1965. Nearly 500 student-athletes train and compete in the athletic district located on the east end of the campus in Tampa, Fla. The Bulls have claimed 15 American Athletic Conference team titles since joining the conference in 2013, including four in 2016-17, and own 112 conference championships overall. Ten USF programs reached national postseason competition in the 2016-17 season and nine were ranked in the Top 25 nationally. The Bulls posted a program-record 86 percent Graduation Success Rate in 2016, logged an annual department grade-point average over a 3.0 for the six straight semesters, and saw 106 student-athletes earn their degree during the 2016-17 academic period.
