USF set to Battle No. 11 Baylor

TAMPA, JAN. 31, 2019– The USF men's tennis team will travel to Waco, Texas, to battle its first ranked opponent of the season in No. 11 Baylor on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Courts.
 
USF (2-2) has had a consistent start to the 2019 season, first taking down FGCU, 5-2 in the season opener at home. The Bulls traveled to the Jerry Simmons Invitational, hosted by LSU, where they went 1-2, defeating Nicholls State, 4-0, before falling to Penn State, 4-2, and Georgia State, 4-3.
 
USF's undefeated top player No. 43 Alberto Barroso-Campos (Montijo, Spain) is 4-0 in singles to start out his senior campaign. This marks the first four-win start for a Bull since 2016 when All-Americans Roberto Cid (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Dominic Cotrone (Bradenton, Fla.) opened their senior seasons with winning streaks, 5-0 and 4-0, respectively.
 
Freshman Chase Ferguson (Melbourne, Australia) is 3-1 in singles. Ferguson is one of only six freshmen in the American Athletic Conference with just one loss.
 
In doubles, Barroso-Campos and Jakub Wojcik (Delray Beach, Fla.) lead the team with a 2-1 record on court one. Barroso-Campos and Wojcik won their first doubles match against FGCU's Felipe Escobar and Mateo Ruiz, 6-4.
 
No. 11 Baylor
 
No. 11 Baylor starts the 2019 season with a new head coach in Brian Boland. Boland possesses a 574-90 career record and has coached his teams to 17 NCAA Tournament appearances. Head Coach Boland has since gone 5-0 in his first season with the Bears.
 
Baylor's roster has two Top 40 players in seniors No. 17 Will Little and No. 33 Johannes Schretter and Finn Bass who ranks fifth in the ITA Freshmen Top 10. The 2018 season saw three All-Big 12 First Team Honors with Schretter earning a spot in singles and Roy Smith and Sven Lah being named to doubles. Sophomore Lah is currently 5-0 in singles, the only Bear with five finished wins this season.
