Two Bulls Earn National Team Call-ups
October 01, 2019 | Women's Soccer
TAMPA, Oct. 1, 2019 – A duo of current women's soccer players were brought up to their respective national teams. Freshman Lucy Roberts was tabbed by the England National Team to participate with the U19 squad while junior Ricquelle Farquharson was chosen by the Jamaican National Team. Both were invited for upcoming competitions in early October.
Lucy Roberts | Def. | England U19
Roberts' impressive freshman year continues as the Cheshire, England native was selected as part of England's U19 National Team roster heading into the qualifying stages for the UEFA Women's U19 Championship.
"The girls are so proud of her. We're so excited for her," said head coach Denise Schilte-Brown. "We hope that she's brought us along with her, that she feels the love and the fight that we have for her and the confidence that we have in her moving forward. She's missed here, but we're proud of her."
England has three matches in the upcoming weeks, with all of the matches being played in Belarus. England is in group 11 for qualifying, competing against Serbia, Belarus and Cyprus for a chance to qualify for the finals.
The English will begin play on Wednesday against Cyprus. The team will then play host Belarus on Saturday and Serbia on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
The top two teams in each group, and the four third-place teams with the best record against the top-two in their section, will participate in the elite round draw in November. Further games will be played in spring 2020.
Roberts has been phenomenal for the Bulls as a freshman this season. The center-back has started every game but one and has become a commanding presence on the Bulls' back line. She has been a critical part of the defensive efforts that have limited opposing teams to just 3.22 shots on goal and 7.11 shots per game this season.
Before coming to South Florida, Roberts was the youngest player to make her debut for the Liverpool WSL team while spending time playing for Manchester United. Roberts is no novice to international play, either. She was a member of the England U17 team that squad reached the semifinals of the 2018 UEFA Women's U17 Championship.
Ricquelle Farquharson | GK | Jamaica
Farquharson was selected to join Jamaica's full national team at the 2020 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Championship qualification competitions.
"This is an awesome opportunity for Rikki," said head coach Denise Schilte-Brown. "We're really proud of her. She works hard. I'm sure she will represent not only USF, but also her country well."
Jamaica opens up Olympic qualifications this week, serving as host for Group B in the qualification competitions. Jamaica's pod is composed of Babados, the U.S. Virgin Island, Saint Lucia and Cuba.
The Jamaican national team opened play on Monday with a 12-1 rout against Cuba. Moving forward, the Jamaicans play Barbados on Friday, followed by Saint Lucia on Sunday and the U.S. Virgin Islands on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
The qualification competitions will narrow the field down to five, who will join the USA, Mexico and Canada in the CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Championship in early 2020.
Farquharson has played in nine games for the Bulls during her career, amassing a 0.59 goals-against average and a .818 save percentage.
Farquharson moved up through the Jamaican national program, having also participated with their U20 team in 2015 and 2016. The Davie, Fla. native was a CONCACAF finalist in 2015.
