TAMPA, Oct. 17, 2019 – The University of South Florida women's soccer team continued their late game heroics, using a goal in the 89
th minute from
Emma Davies (St. Catherines, Canada) to take down the UConn Huskies, 2-1.
Â
Evelyne Viens (L'Ancienne-Lorette, Canada) tied the American Athletic Conference all-time record with her game-tying goal early in the second half. The goal was the 61
st of her career, tying the record set by UConn's Rachel Hill (2013-16).
Â
The first half was relatively uneventful. USF controlled possession for most of the first half but didn't start to break through the Huskies' defense until the later stages. At the end of the half, South Florida had tallied five shots on goal, but UConn's Randi Palacios stopped all five.
Â
UConn took the lead less than a minute into the second half. Yamilee Eveillard received a pass in the box and was able to find the back of the net to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Â
Viens tied the game just over a minute later in the 48
th minute. After she broke through a wall of UConn defenders, the senior beat goalkeeper Palacios to tie the game back up at 1-1.
Â
The stalemate returned after Viens' goal. USF continued to control possession, but the Huskies limited solid opportunities for the Bulls.
Â
With just over a minute to go, Davies found herself with the ball in front of the net. Dribbling to find an open shooting lane, the sophomore fired a shot past the Huskies goalkeeper to give USF the 2-1 win.
Â
USF continued its dominance in the shot column. The Bulls took 25 shots in the game, compared to UConn's five. Viens and
Sydny Nasello (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) tied for the team lead with six shots each.

Quotable
Â
Head coach Denise Schilte-Brown on today's game…
"I was pretty optimistic going into the game. I thought we had a pretty good game plan and that the girls were set. I knew UConn would come and battle. I think they're a good team. And they did. They gave us a lot to handle tonight. We did settle in in the second half and do more. We asked the girls to keep the ball on the other half of the field and do a little bit more of changing the point of attack before we went to goal. I thought we were unlucky on a lot of the corners, unlucky in a lot of our shots, but to take nothing away from the goalkeeper for UConn. She did a great job."
