TAMPA, Oct. 2, 2019 – No. RV/22 South Florida women's soccer continues its conference schedule with a road trip to Texas. The Bulls face off against Houston on Thursday, followed by a trip to Dallas on Sunday to battle No. 22/RV SMU.
USF opened American Athletic Conference play on Thursday, Sept. 26 against Tulsa. In the Bulls' first overtime match of the season, South Florida dominated on the stat sheet, with 14 more corner kicks and outshooting Tulsa, 34-13. Ultimately, the Bulls would take the win after a
Sydny Nasello (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) drew a foul in the box and
Andrea Hauksdottir converted the penalty kick to give South Florida the 2-1 victory.
The Bulls were back in action on Sept. 29 against No. 11 Memphis. South Florida battled the Tigers and generated multiple opportunities, but the Tigers would use a goal in the 51
st minute as the game-winner to clinch a 2-1 victory.
The Bulls checked in at No. 22 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com poll released Monday. The team also received votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll and was placed at No. 26 in the NCAA RPI release on Monday.
HOUSTON (3-7)
Houston carries a 3-7 record into Thursday's match. Thursday's tilt versus the Bulls marks the opening match of the Cougars' conference schedule.
Houston is led by junior forward Jazmin Grant, who has two goals and one assist on the season. Tied with Grant in points is senior forward Desiree Bowen, who has one goal and three assists. The Cougars have approached goalkeeping with a committee mindset, with starts split between three players. Overall, the Houston goalkeepers have a 2.05 GAA and a 0.571 save percentage.
At the helm, Diego Bocanegra is in his third season at Houston. He has a 17-26-3 record in his three years and a 35-39-12 record overall.
NO. 22/RV SMU (7-1-1)
SMU has not faced any AAC opponents yet either, however the Mustangs face UCF on Thursday to open their conference slate. So far this season, Southern Methodist boasts a 7-1-1 record. The Mustangs were ranked No. 22 in the latest release of the United Soccer Coaches poll and received consideration in the TopDrawerSoccer.com poll.
Senior forward Allie Thornton has led SMU with nine goals so far this season. Behind her, sophomore midfielder Celiana Torres has four goals and five assists. In net, freshman Tatum Sutherland has been strong for the Mustangs so far this season. The rookie boasts a 0.72 GAA and a .793 save percentage.
Chris Petrucelli has been the leader of the program for the last eight seasons, amassing a 70-62-16 record. He also coached previously at Notre Dame and Texas. In his 30 years coaching, Petrucelli has a 410-172-52 record.
NOTABLES
- Evelyne Viens (Quebec, Canada) is topping the stat sheets nationally, ranking in the top 25 in seven different categories. She is also the active DI career leader in goals (57), goals per game (0.88) and points (136) while ranking second in points per game (2.09). Viens is also one of six active players to have 30 goals and 20 assists.
- The last two seasons that the Bulls started 1-1 in conference play, the team went on to win an AAC championship. In 2017, the team won the conference tournament and captured the regular season title in 2018.
