TAMPA, Oct. 24, 2019 – The No. 21 University of South Florida women's soccer team (11-3; 6-1 The American) extended its win streak to five with a 1-0 victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats (6-8-2; 4-3 The American).
Sydney Martinez (Rincon, Ga.) posted her second straight shutout in the win.
USF controlled play for most of the game and its defense played well in the second half. The Bulls stifled Cincinnati's hopes of a comeback in the second half with good clock management and a suffocating defense.
South Florida dominated in the opening half. Just under three minutes into the game, junior defender
Chyanne Dennis (Sunrise, Fla.) launched a pass up the field to senior forward
Evelyne Viens (L'Ancienne-Lorette, Quebec, Canada), who dribbled through a wall of Cincinnati defenders and scored to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
For the rest of the half, the USF defense played exceptionally well in midfield. Cincinnati was only able to tally three shots in the opening 45 minutes, and only one of those shots found its way on goal. Martinez made the save on the lone shot to give USF a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Play in the second half was contained to midfield for most of the opening minutes. Eventually, Cincinnati started to put pressure on Martinez and the USF backline. However, Martinez stopped the only shot that made its way on net in the second half, giving USF the 1-0 victory.
The Bulls continued its control in the shot column, having out-shot every opponent so far this season. Tonight, USF tallied 18 shots and limited Cincinnati to seven, including a 7-2 differential in shots on goal.
Quotable
Head coach Denise Schilte-Brown on the win for the Bulls…
"I'm really proud of the girls because the Bearcats are a tough team to play. They're athletic, aggressive and their style is not easy to play against. I think this is the best game of soccer that we've put together on their turf. We kept possession really well, we played as a group and created opportunities. I would've liked to have seen more goals, but I'm excited for the group and now it's just about recovery."
