TAMPA, Oct. 31, 2019 – The No. 19/24 University of South Florida Women's Soccer team had its six-game winning streak snapped by the UCF Knights in a 1-0, War on I-4 loss. The Knights scored late in the first half to earn the victory.
Â
USF (12-4; 7-2 The American) once again led its opponent in shots. The Bulls took 19 shots in the match, with 10 going on goal. UCF (10-3-4; 5-2-2 The American) tallied 11 shots with seven on goal.Â
Through the first half, play was back-and-forth with each side getting opportunities. Ultimately the defenses and goalkeepers defused any attacks before they reached the back of the net.
Â
UCF would break through, however, with just under three minutes left in the first half. Ellie Moreno received a pass near the side of the box and slipped it past
Sydney Martinez (Rincon, Ga.) to give the Knights a 1-0 halftime lead.
Â
In the second half, the Bulls consistently challenged the UCF goalkeeper, taking some well-placed shots on net. However, none of the Bulls 10 second-half shots found their way to the back of the net, with the Knight's Caroline DeLisle making several goal-line saves to maintain the lead.
Â
Overall, Martinez set a new season-high with six saves on the night. Junior midfielder
Katie Kitching (Bedale, England) led the Bulls with three shots on goal.

Head coach Denise Schilte-Brown on the game…
"It took so long for us to move and our energy was really low. It's not a fun day trip. You have to leave on time to miss the traffic and then you have to sit somewhere to eat and get here an hour early. If I was making excuses, it's kind of the lull in travel. At the end of the day, UCF was ready to play from the whistle. I thought the first half, they took it to us. I personally think that in the second half they didn't cross midfield as much and we had a majority of the opportunities in the second half. It's a little unlucky, but that's how it goes."
