HOUSTON, Oct. 3, 2019 – The accolades keep coming in for
Evelyne Viens, who had five points in the Bulls' 3-1 win over Houston. The senior forward scored twice and added an assist, which brings her career point total to 141, breaking the American Athletic Conference all-time record previously set by UConn's Rachel Hill (2013-16).
The Bulls (7-3, 2-1) used three first-half goals to take the lead and never looked back. USF's offense surged in the first half, tallying 12 shots in the opening 45 minutes. South Florida spread around the opportunities as well, with nine players taking a shot during the game.
Viens (Quebec, Canada) opened the scoring for the Bulls in the 10
th minute of play.
Aubrey Megrath (West Palm Beach, Fla.) found Viens in front of the net, and the Canadian used a header to redirect the ball into the goal to give South Florida a 1-0 lead.
Andrea Hauksdottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) also recorded an assist on the play.
The Canadian struck again in the 27
th minute, this time off an assist from
Sydny Nasello (Land O' Lakes, Fla). Eleven minutes later, junior
Sabrina Wagner (New Port Richey, Fla.) scored, using a pass from Viens to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead heading into the break.
Houston fought back in the second half, with Mia Brascia scoring for the Cougars in the 62
nd minute. USF's defense tightened back up in the final minutes to prevent a Houston comeback and clinch the 3-1 victory.
Quotable
Head coach Denise Schilte-Brown on the win…
"It was really fun to watch the team play in the first half. They did an excellent job of executing our tactics and really had a lot of confidence in their shooting and finishing. We were very dangerous throughout the first half. The second half, I think we just got complacent. It's easy to get complacent when you go up three goals. We didn't move very well as a unit. It was nothing intentional, but it just wasn't the same team in the second half that played in the first half. We're going to try to use the momentum of how we played in the first half as we go into SMU to highlight a lot of the things that we did well in that game."
