No. 22/RV USF Sweeps Road Trip, Defeats No. RV/22 SMU, 1-0

TAMPA, Oct. 6, 2019 – The No. 22/RV South Florida women's soccer team earned its second victory of the week, this time taking down No. RV/22 SMU, 1-0. Senior forward Evelyne Viens (L'Ancienne-Lorette, Canada) scored the game-winner, while sophomore Sydney Martinez (Rincon, Ga.) earned her first shutout victory of the season.

The Bulls (8-3, 3-1) are now 4-0 when playing in Texas this season. The Bulls won each of its matches in the UTSA Tournament in September and won both conference games in Texas this week.

The first half was a battle of defenses, with both teams limited in opportunities. Toward the end of the half, USF's offense started to break through and apply pressure to the SMU back-line. By the end of the opening 45 minutes, the Bulls had tallied eight shots.

After the break, the Bulls struck pay dirt. Katie Kitching (Bedale, England) found Viens who pushed through the backline of the Mustangs and beat goalkeeper Tatum Sutherland to put the Bulls ahead 1-0 in the 53rd minute.

South Florida kept challenging the SMU defense for the rest of the game, but Sutherland kept the Bulls from finding the back of the net for a second time. Ultimately, the Viens' goal in the 53rd minute was all the Bulls would need to walk away with the shutout victory.

Martinez earned her first solo shutout of the year in the win and her third victory overall. The win marked the sophomore's fifth career shutout. Kitching recorded her third assist of the season, tying her career-high for season assists.

 Quotable
 Head coach Denise Schilte-Brown on today's game…
"It's never easy to go on the road for two trips. Texas is a long way from home. The girls did a great job of staying together and staying insulated together and building each other up and working for each other. That really manifested itself on the field. It was a tough game today. It was hot. SMU is a solid team. It was great to see the girls pull together. It only took the one goal, but it was such a great defensive effort from the whole group. Sydney Martinez was exceptional in goal today."
