Viens, Wagner Earn American Player of the Week Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I., Oct. 7, 2019 – Two members of the women's soccer team won American Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors after the Bulls swept a trip to Texas. Evelyne Viens was named offensive player of the week while Sabrina Wagner was named defensive player of the week after a 3-1 win over Houston on Oct. 3 and a 1-0 victory against SMU on Oct. 7.

Senior forward Viens (L'Ancienne-Lorette, Canada) scored three goals and added an assist during last week's games. She recorded points on each of the Bulls' four goals across the two games. Her five-point effort against Houston pushed her to 141 career points, which set a new conference record.

Viens also moved closer to the conference all-time goals record. She currently has 60 career goals, only one behind current leader Rachel Hill, who scored 61 times for UConn between 2013-2016.

This is Viens' third time being named offensive player of the week this season. She is the only player to be named as offensive player of the week more than once this season.

Junior defender Wagner (New Port Richey, Fla.) also had an impressive weekend. Her goal against Houston closed out USF scoring in the match. She was also a key part of the defensive effort that limited Houston and SMU, which was ranked No. 22 in the United Soccer Coaches poll, to a combined four shots on goal.

Wagner's defensive abilities were on display against the Mustangs. SMU entered the game ranked 16th in the nation in scoring offense and 23rd in shots per game, and the Bulls' backline shut out the Mustangs and limited the team to 10 shots, with only two finding their way on goal.

Wagner is one of three players in the conference to have earned defensive player of the week honors twice.
