No. 11 USF Readies for Historic First Trip to NCAA Sweet 16

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Nov. 23, 2019 – The No. 11 University of South Florida women's soccer program is heading to the third-round of the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history. The Bulls will meet one-seeded Florida State in the Sweet 16 on Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
USF defeated Washington, 2-0, yesterday in the second round. Senior forward Evelyne Viens (L'Ancienne-Lorette, Quebec, Canada) scored both of USF's goals to secure the victory, while sophomore Sydney Martinez (Rincon, Ga.) posted seven saves to preserve a shutout.
 
No. 5 Florida State (17-5)
Florida State was given the one-seed for USF's section of the bracket. The Seminoles carry a 17-5 record into the third-round match.
 
Senior forward Deyna Castellanos has 33 points (11 goals, 11 assists) this season to lead FSU. Behind her, five players have also recorded double-digit point totals on the season. Altogether, the Seminoles have scored 47 goals and tallied 43 assists. Redshirt senior Caroline Jeffers has played 19 games in net for FSU this season, tallying a 1.12 goals-against average and a 0.681 save percentage.
 
Florida State is the reigning national champions.
 
NOTABLES
  • Martinez recorded a new season-high with seven saves against Washington.
  • Viens now has four consecutive multi-goal games. She scored two goals in each of USF's games in the American Athletic Conference Tournament, while also scoring three against Florida in the first round.
