Women’s Soccer Coaching Staff Named South Region Staff of the Year

TAMPA, Fla., Dec. 6, 2019 – USF Women's soccer head coach Denise Schilte-Brown and her staff were named the top coaching group in the South Region by United Soccer Coaches, the organization announced Friday. The South Region consists of teams from the American Athletic, Atlantic Sun, Conference USA and Ohio Valley Conference.

USF's staff is composed of Schilte-Brown, associate head coach Chris Brown, assistant coach Iban Lopez and volunteer assistant coach Chris Barocas. Alex Delgado serves as director of operations, while Chase Burke is a volunteer assistant director of operations.

South Florida challenged previous program highs this past season. The team broke into the top 10 in the national rankings for the first time in program history on Sept. 16, when TopDrawerSoccer.com placed the Bulls at No. 10.

Overall, the team finished with 16 wins, a new program best, while also reaching the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament for the first time in history after its sixth berth to the tournament field. USF also won its third consecutive conference title, with a regular-season championship in 2018 and tournament championships in 2017 and 2019.

The staff also oversaw another All-American effort from Evelyne Viens (L'Ancienne-Lorette, Quebec), who has now been an All-American in each of the last three years. USF also had the conference's best striker in Viens, as well as the best midfielder in Andrea Hauksdottir (Kopavogur, Iceland).

Both Viens and Hauksdottir were also named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Region Team and all-conference first team. Sydny Nasello (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) was named all-conference second team, while Lucy Roberts (Cheshire, England) and Rosalia Muino Gonzalez (Coruna, Spain) were placed on the AAC all-rookie team. Sabrina Wagner (New Port Richey, Fla.) earned a spot on the Academic All-District Team, selected by CoSIDA.

The team ranked in the top 25 in the nation in four categories: corner kicks per game (24th, 6.38), assists per game (23rd, 2.00), shots per game (14th, 17.38) and shots on goal per game (20th, 8.14). The high-pressure offense stifled opposing teams this season, with the Bulls posting a plus-195 shot differential, resulting in a plus-24 goal differential.

The staff now has the opportunity to be named as the National Staff of the Year as selected by United Soccer Coaches.
