Bulls Snap South Alabama’s Ten-Match Win Streak with a 4-3 Victory

JACKSONVILLE, March 15, 2019 – South Florida men's tennis ended South Alabama's ten-match winning streak in a 4-3 finish at the UNF Tennis Complex in Jacksonville on Friday afternoon.

USF (10-5) started the match with a doubles point loss, falling 6-4 on court one and 6-2 on court two to South Alabama.

Lagging 1-0 into singles, the Bulls kicked back into action with No. 29 Alberto Barroso-Campos (Montijo, Spain) winning court one, 7-6 (5), 6-2 and Chase Ferguson (Melbourne, Australia) picking up court two, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.

The Jaguars responded with wins against Pierre Luquet (Draguignan, France) 7-5, 7-5 and Sergio Gomez Montesa (Valencia, Spain), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, on courts three and five, respectively.

Ivan Yatsuk (Minsk, Belarus) tied up the match with a big three-set win on court six, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.

With the Jaguars's ten-match win streak on the line, Jakub Wojcik (Delray Beach, Fla.) continued play for the Bulls on court four. Wojcik lost his first set, 4-6, but the junior came back swinging, winning the next sets 6-4, 7-6 (5) to clinch the match for USF.

Quotable

Head coach, Ashley Fisher, on the win and Jakub Wojcik's resilience…

"Great trip for our boys. It all came down to competing. We lost the doubles point both days [in Jacksonville] but we tell ourselves we are tougher than our opponents and we believe down the stretch that toughness will be the difference. Kuba saved three match points in one of the gutsiest efforts I've ever seen. He wasn't 100% physically but he chose to focus on things that help him and was a warrior. This team is believing in each other and great things are happening for us".
