TAMPA, MARCH 20, 2019 – USF won its fourth consecutive conference matchup after being down 3-1 against Tulsa, to improve to 4-0 in The American Wednesday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
USF (9-7, 4-0 AAC) battled on courts two and three to clinch the doubles point over the Golden Hurricane (11-7, 0-2 AAC). The nation's No. 15 tandem won for Tulsa on court one, 6-1, but USF's
Janvhi Clark (Tauranga, New Zealand) and
Laura Pellicer Perello (Valencia, Spain) answered with a 6-4 win on court three. USF took a 5-3 lead on court two, but the Golden Hurricane would answer with two points to tie it up, 5-5 on the deciding doubles court. Senior
Ana Roman Dominguez (Burgos, Spain) and freshman
Amelie Boy (Trianon, Mauritis) won two straight games to close out the match 7-5 and clinch the doubles point.
Tulsa was ready to respond in singles, winning courts three, five and two in straight sets to take a 3-1 lead. Freshman Pellicer Perello won her seventh straight match with a three-set, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, victory on court four to put the Bulls' first singles point on the board.
Sophomore
Alexandria Mjos (Austin, Texas) won her second singles match of the season when she went to three sets on court six. She won 6-3 in her first set, dropped the second, 6-4, and went on to dominate her third set, 6-2, on court six and tied up the match for USF, 3-3.
USF looked to the top court where senior Roman Dominguez was also in her third set. With the match on the line Roman Dominguez battled in her third set and sent the match into the tiebreaker. During the tiebreaker, with Tulsa's Martina Okalova leading 6-5, Roman Dominguez scored a game point, and due to Okalova's language, the match was called in favor of Roman Dominguez, clinching the 3-1 comeback to win 4-3. After beating the No. 98 player 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(6), on court one, Roman Dominguez now has five ranked wins on the season.
