USF Remains Undefeated in Conference Play with Comeback Win against Memphis

Pierre Luquet clinched USF’s 4-2 win against Memphis on senior day, Friday.

TAMPA, April 12, 2019 – USF men's tennis bounced back from a doubles point loss to take down Memphis, 4-2, on senior day and remain undefeated in The American.

Memphis (11-12, 2-4) won the doubles point with a win by their No. 60-ranked pair Oscar Cutting and David Stevenson, 6-2, on court one against No. 67 duo Alberto Barroso-Campos (Montijo, Spain) and junior Pierre Luquet (Draguignan, France). Tigers tandem Jan Pallares and Patrick Sydow clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 finish on court two over USF's Jakub Wojcik (Delray Beach, Fla.) and Ivan Yatsuk (Minsk, Belarus).

Eager to get the Bulls on the board, freshman Chase Ferguson (Melbourne, Australia) tied the match with a straight-set, 6-3, 6-0 win on court two, improving his season singles clip to 12-5.

The Tigers answered with a 6-4, 6-4 win on court five against Yatsuk to regain the lead.

USF's only senior, No. 17 Alberto Barroso-Campos (Montijo, Spain) amassed his 42nd singles win in three years with the Bulls on senior day. Barroso-Campos was instrumental in the Bulls' win, tying up the match 2-2 with his 17th win this season, 7-6(5), 6-4 on court one.

The match now tied, 2-2, freshman Sergio Gomez Montesa (Valencia, Spain) gave the Bulls their first lead of the day, winning, 7-5, 6-3, on court six.

Junior Luquet battled for the Bulls, winning court three to clinch the match, 6-3, 7-5.

Quotable

Head coach, Ashley Fisher, on the win…
"
Another example of our guys believing in each other and being willing to project optimism and expect things to turn our way. An inspiring performance from Sergio who was down 5-3, 40—0 his first set and clawed his way back. Those moments are huge building blocks that enable the rest of the guys to climb on board and from there Alberto and Kuba both came through tough situations. We keep projecting belief and expecting good things to happen and that has been the tale of the season. Excited for another great opportunity on Sunday."
