Ennis Defends Triple Jump Title at AAC Outdoor Championships
WICHITA, Kan., MAY 12, 2019 – D'Angelo Ennis captured his second straight triple jump title and
Stone Baker placed second in the pole vault Sunday afternoon at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships from Cessna Stadium.
Ennis (Kingston, Jamaica) leaped a distance of 52-06.75 to record his best distance of the season, earn all-conference honors and become the first back-to-back triple jump winner in AAC history. His victory also gives USF the triple jump champion in four of the first six years of league existence. USF great Matthew O'Neal won the title in 2014 and 2016.
"Last year I won with a longer distance, but this one was so much more special to me because I was battling a lot of aches and pains all season and I hadn't been anywhere near what I was capable of," Ennis said. "I was struggling all year and it was really a hill to climb coming into the championships. I told myself this could be the last time I would ever compete for USF, so I was just going to give it everything I had. I am grateful for this win, grateful for the distance and I am going to try to do better from here on."
Baker (New Port Richey, Fla.) registered a personal-best height of 16-09.25 in the pole vault and earned all-conference accolades despite missing over a month with an injury. He surpassed his previous best height of 16-07.50 en route to earning eight points and a second-place finish.
"This was my first outdoor conference meet and I've had a strained hamstring that has kept me out for about a month," Baker said. "This was my first meet back and we had great conditions and great weather. I had a great time competing and I'm pretty happy to have been able to finish in second."
Sophomore
Seth Musselman (St. Could, Fla.) scored three points and placed sixth in the pole vault with a height of 15-11.25, while senior
Mitchell Mueller (Algonac, Mich.) tied for seventh with a height of 15-05.50 an earned 0.75 points.
Nicole Carroll (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) tallied five points with a height of 12-10.00 to record her second-best mark of the season and a fourth-place finish in the pole vault. Junior
Stephanie Lambeth (Frankenmuth, Mich.) followed in fifth place and scored four points with a height of 12-10.00.
Sophomore
Brittany Krug (Loretto, Pa.) scored five points and posted the third-longest outdoor javelin throw in school history on Friday. Krug turned in a fourth-place finish and registered a new personal best with a distance of 151-09.00, surpassing her previous top distance of 151-07.00 by two inches.
"Scoring points means a lot because it's not only an individual event, but it's a team event as well," Krug said. "I was honored to have my team behind me and to hear them cheering me on. That always gives you some momentum and enthusiasm going into a throw. It was just a good day overall."
Sophomore
Imani Carmouche (Mt. Zion, Ga.) placed sixth in the high jump and scored two points with a height of 5-04.50, while freshman
Melvin Briley (Jacksonville) also picked up two points following his seventh-place showing in the triple jump with a distance of 47-11.75.
