USF Falls to No. 2 Texas in NCAA Second Round
AUSTIN, TEXAS, May 4, 2019 – Despite a 1-0 lead with a doubles win, USF men's tennis' season ended with a 4-1 loss to Texas on Saturday evening.
Â
With senior
Alberto Barroso-Campos' (Montijo, Spain) assistance, the Bulls (18-8) earned the doubles point for the second consecutive match. The conference player of the year and
Pierre Luquet (Draguignan, France), who together rank No. 88, defeated the No. 5 tandem from Texas, Christian Sigsgaard and Harrison Scott, 6-3 on the premiere court.
Jakub Wojcik (Delray Beach, Fla.) and
Ivan Yatsuk (Minsk, Belarus) followed suit and clinched the doubles point, 6-4, on court-two.
Â
The Longhorns (25-3) responded in singles with wins on courts four and five. Gomez Montesa fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, on the fifth while Wojcik was defeated by No.55 Harrison Scott on court four, 6-1, 6-4.
Â
Action continued on the remaining courts as the Bulls tried to fight off a stacked singles roster. This match was the first time this season four out of six Bulls were matched up against ranked singles opponents.
Â
No. 12 Yuya Ito of Texas extended the lead with a court-three victory over conference freshman of the year
Chase Ferguson (Melbourne, Australia), 6-3, 6-4.
Â
Despite forcing a seven-point tiebreaker in the second set, Yatsuk ultimately fell 6-1, 7-6 (4) to Rodrigo Banzer of the Longhorns.
Â
USF ends its season with an 18-8 record after winning its fifth American Athletic Conference Championship title in six years.
Â
Up Next
Barroso-Campos, The American Player of the Year, will continue to represent USF at the NCAA Singles Championship, which takes place May 20-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.

Quotable
Head coach, Ashley Fisher, on facing No. 2 Texas and looking towards the future...
"We didn't get the result we wanted today but that doesn't take away from the enormous success this year has been. Full credit to Texas who were just too good today. Like we have done all year, we will learn from this season and apply it to move things forward and improve. Taking the doubles point from the number two team in the nation was a sign of what this team is capable of. Our culture improved so much this year and this program is poised for greatness. I want to thank everyone who played a role and supported this year. We were honored to wear the green and gold and will be back in 2020."
