Alvarez and Wisely Taken on Final Day of 2019 MLB Draft

TAMPA, June 5, 2019 – Junior right hander Nelson Alvarez and senior righty Alec Wisely were both selected on the final day of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft Wednesday afternoon.

Alvarez (Miami) didn't wait long on Day 3, going to the New York Yankees in the 13th round. In his lone season in Tampa, Alvarez made 23 appearances out of the bullpen. As the team's primary closer, he led USF and finished fifth in The American with eight saves, striking out 43 in 35.1 innings.

The junior held opponents to a team-low .172 batting average. He struck out seven in 2.1 innings at Bethune-Cookman (3/13), struck out three in 2.2 hitless innings at Tulane (4/14) and struck out three in 2.0 perfect innings against Houston (4/26).




Wisely (Jacksonville, Fla.) made a team high 15 starts in first full season as a primary pitcher in 2019. He held a 4.88 ERA with 54 strikeouts in 75.2 innings. He went at least 5.0 innings in nine of his starts. He tossed 7.0 innings, allowing a combined two earned runs in consecutive starts against Liberty (3/9) and Dartmouth (3/16).

The senior tossed 7.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits at UConn (5/11). He was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll twice and was named the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week during the year. Wisely had 106 strikeouts in 123.1 innings in his two seasons at USF, pitching to a 6-4 record.




Along with senior Joe Genord (Lake Worth, Fla.), who was taken in the ninth round by the New York Mets on Day 2, the three make it five-straight seasons in which USF has had multiple MLB Draft selections.
 
The program has had 20-consecutive seasons with at least one player taken in the MLB Draft. USF baseball has had a top-10 round pick in five-straight drafts and 123 players selected all-time.  
 
About USF Baseball
The University of South Florida baseball team is one of the fastest rising programs in the country. The Bulls reached the NCAA Regionals in 2015 for the first time in 13 years and followed that success with a 42-19 record and second NCAA regional trip in three years in 2017. The Bulls continued the success under first-year head coach Billy Mohl in 2018, reaching 36 wins and advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time since 2012, while being ranked in multiple polls for the final two months. The team had four players drafted in the 2018 MLB Draft, including the program's fourth first rounder, Shane McClanahan. Junior third baseman David Villar was taken in the 11th round after tallying 24 doubles and hitting better than .370, being named first team all-conference and an All-American. The USF Baseball program has won five conference titles and the Bulls have made 13 NCAA appearances.
