TAMPA, Sept. 25, 2019 – No. 16 South Florida women's soccer starts its conference schedule with Tulsa, followed by what could be one of the most consequential matches of the year against Memphis on Sept. 29.
USF is coming off a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Texas Tech on Sept. 21. The Bulls outshot the Red Raiders, 16-6, but could not overcome an early 2-0 deficit. Junior defender
Sabrina Wagner (New Port Richey, Fla.) scored her first goal of the season during her stellar performance, while sophomore forward
Emma Davies (Ontario, Canada) tallied her first assist of the year on Wagner's goal.
The Bulls wrapped up their nonconference schedule with a 5-2 record, which included victories over Auburn and No. 21 Wake Forest. South Florida was also ranked at No. 16 in the first release of the NCAA's RPI. USF went 1-1 against teams ranked in the top 25 of the NCAA's RPI during nonconference play, defeating No. 15 Wake Forest but falling against No. 17 Florida.
TULSA (6-4)
Tulsa enters Thursday's match with a 6-4 record, coming off a dominant 6-0 win over Chicago State in its nonconference finale. The Golden Hurricane scored four goals in the second half to propel themselves to victory.
In the last meeting between the two teams, USF came away with a 2-1 victory in 2018. Former Bull
Kelli Burney and senior Bri Blethen (Bradenton, Fla.) scored to give USF a 2-0 lead in the 25
th minute. Tulsa attempted a comeback, scoring a goal in the 75
th minute, but South Florida held strong for the rest of the match to earn the victory.
Tulsa has spread around its goal scoring this season, with 14 players having scored goals at some point during the season. Aubrey Lechlider leads Tulsa with four goals and one assist for nine points. In net, senior Mica MacKay has been the primary keeper for the Golden Hurricane, posting a 1.41 GAA and .722 sv% thus far.
At the helm, Kyle Cussen is in his 12th year in charge of the program. In his time as a collegiate coach, he has accumulated a record of 104-98-27 (.513) at Tulsa and a 214-172-42 (.549) record overall.
NO. 11 MEMPHIS (8-1)
Memphis carries a six-game win streak into this week. Before arriving in Tampa, the Tigers head to Orlando to play UCF on Thursday. Memphis currently owns the best record in the league with an 8-1 record.
The Bulls met the Tigers twice last season. USF won, 2-0, in the regular season behind a brace from
Evelyne Viens (Quebec, Canada). When the two met in the American Tournament Championship game, Memphis earned a 3-0 victory.
Clarissa Larisey paces the Tigers on offense with nine goals and one assist. Tanya Boychuk sits right behind her with five goals and one assist, tied for points with Stasia Mallin who has two goals and seven assists. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Moberg has been the goalkeeper for Memphis so far, recording a 0.15 GAA, a .900 sv% and five shutouts.
Brooks Monaghan leads the Memphis women's soccer program. He's in his 20th season with the Tigers, having racked up a 237-131-28 (.634) record. His accolades include six conference championships and seven NCAA Tournament berths.
NOTABLES
- The Bulls had two players named to the initial pool of candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. Viens and Andrea Hauksdottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) were chosen to the first list of 30. The list gets narrowed to 10 near midseason and then the winner is announced during the College Cup in December.
- The Bulls have finished with a winning record in nonconference play in every year since 2009.
