Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 16 Bulls Fall to No. 11 Memphis, 2-1

TAMPA, Sept. 29, 2019 – No. 16 South Florida women's soccer battled to the last minute but fell short to No. 11 Memphis in the second contest of conference play. The Bulls led both teams in multiple categories, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Tiger's offense during a hard-fought match.

South Florida (6-3, 1-1) out-shot its opponent once again. The Bulls took 18 shots compared to Memphis' nine, but the Tigers found the back of the net once during each half.

Both defenses stood strong early in the game. Play was contained largely to midfield in the opening minutes, with only one shot in the first 10 minutes.

Memphis took the lead in the 31st minute, with freshman Mya Jones intercepting a defensive pass from the Bulls and setting sophomore Claire Abrey up for a shot to the back corner. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

Senior forward Evelyne Viens (Quebec, Canada) tied the game up during the 48th minute, scoring her ninth goal of the season for the Bulls. The goal was assisted by junior midfielder Katie Kitching (Bedale, England) and senior forward Aubrey Megrath (West Palm Beach, Fla.), finding success with a quick counter attack that found Viens' foot inside the box.

The Bull's second half goal was answered three minutes later by Claire Abrey for her second of the day. Mya Jones also earned her second assist of the afternoon.

The Bulls challenged Memphis' goalkeeper, Elizabeth Moberg, throughout the rest of the half, but the junior stood strong and made seven saves on the afternoon to keep the Tiger's 2-1 lead.

Quotable
Head coach Denise Schilte-Brown on the hard-fought loss…
