Three Bulls Named to Provisional Rosters Ahead of Olympic Qualifiers
TAMPA, Jan. 13, 2020 – Three University of South Florida women's soccer players were named to their respective countries' provisional rosters ahead of the 2020 Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) Olympic Qualifying Championship.
Evelyne Viens was selected for Team Canada, while
Chyanne Dennis and
Ricquelle Farquharson were chosen for the Team Jamaica provisional roster.
The participating nations submitted their provisional rosters to Concacaf on Jan. 10. Under the league's regulations, the eight nations' submitted provisional rosters consisting of up to 50 athletes will serve as the basis for the final 20-player rosters for each team. Inclusion on the provisional roster does not guarantee a spot on the final roster. Concacaf will release the final rosters to the public a week before competition at the championship begins. After the official announcement, only injury-related changes will be allowed, up until 24 hours before each team's first match and any injury replacements must come from the preliminary player roster.
The 2020 Concacaf Women's Olympic Qualifying Championship begins on Jan. 28 with an initial group stage that runs through Feb. 4. After group play concludes, the top two finishers from each group will play in the semifinals on Feb. 7, with the finals occurring on Feb. 9.
Group A consists of Costa Rica, Panama, USA and Haiti. Group B is composed of Canada, St. Kitts and Nevis, Mexico and Jamaica. Group play will take place in Texas, while the tournament will be played in Los Angeles.
Viens (L'Ancienne-Lorette, Quebec) capped an incredible career with USF soccer in 2019. The Canadian finished her collegiate career with 73 goals in 77 games, breaking the program and American Athletic Conference all-time record. The three-time All-American and 2019 Scholar All-American holds countless records for both the program and the AAC.
"It's great that Canada has opened the door for
Evelyne Viens," said head coach
Denise Schilte-Brown. "She's worked very hard. I'm sure she's going to represent Canada well if given the opportunity."
Dennis served as an anchor for the Bulls' backline in 2019, leading the team in minutes played (1,826). As a critical part of the USF defense, Dennis helped the team limit opposing teams to just 8.1 shots per game and 3.71 shots on goal per game. Ultimately, the Bulls only allowed 20 goals on the season in 21 games.
Farquharson has played in nine games during her career with USF. In just over 300 minutes played, she has amassed a 0.59 goals-against average and a .818 save percentage.
"We're very excited for the prospect of both Chyanne and Rikki making it to the final cut for Jamaica," said Schilte-Brown. "They are both hardworking, talented athletes and an excellent representation of USF student-athletes."
