Men’s Tennis Back on Road for ETSU and FAU
TAMPA, Jan. 17, 2020 – USF men's tennis is back on the bus, heading to Boca Raton, Fla. to challenge East Tennessee State University on Saturday, Jan. 18 and Florida Atlantic University on Sunday, Jan. 19. Both matches are set for noon starts.
The Bulls (1-0) come off an impressive season opener win against Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Fla. South Florida dominated the Eagles, 7-0, extending its record against FGCU to 5-0.
Pierre Luquet (Draguignan, France) secured the match for USF with a court three straight-set win, 6-1, 6-2, over FGCU's Feliksas Sakalauskas.
With a strong season debut under their belt, USF prepares for the competition ahead.
About ETSU
Martin Stiegwart returns for his third season in command of the East Tennessee State men's tennis program. Stiegwart recently lead the team to a 20-5 record during the 2019 season, going undefeated in Southern Conference action.
Frazier Rengifo returns for his junior year with the Buccaneers, bringing a 18-3 premiere court singles record with him. Rengifo joined Yusuf Khamis to earn a 12-8 doubles record playing primarily on the second court.
In 2019, ETSU won the Southern Conference Men's Tennis Championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament, losing in the first round to South Carolina. The Buccaneers open their 2020 season against FAU on Friday.
About FAU
In his seventh year at the helm, Ricardo Gonzalez is ready to host USF on Sunday. Gonzalez and his team are coming off a 19-10 record in 2019, finishing runner-up at the Conference-USA championships.
The Owls (1-2) are opening their home schedule this weekend host their first match of the season, coming off a recent 7-0 loss to No. 1 Florida. Occupying the premiere court for FAU is Maxime Lapraille, currently winless in singles but 1-2 in doubles with Fernandez Horta.
South Florida leads Florida Atlantic, 7-2, in program history. The teams last met in Feb. 2019, when Luquet clinched the match, 4-3, in a dramatic, three-set battle at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
