USF Sweeps FAU, 7-0, Earning a Ranked-Win in the Process

Jakub Wojcik defeated No. 58 Maxime Lapraille in straight sets during Sunday’s shutout against the Owls.

Boca Raton, Fla., Jan. 19, 2020 – University of South Florida men's tennis left Boca Raton undefeated today after a 7-0 takedown of Florida Atlantic University. Today's win marks the first time the Bulls have started the season with three consecutive victories since 2016.

USF (3-0) earned the doubles point for the fifth consecutive time dating back to the first round of the NCAA tournament last season. A top-court, 6-4 victory by Jakub Wojcik (Delray Beach, Fla.) and Rithvik Bollipalli (Hyderabad, India) over FAU's Maxime Lapraille and Filip Krolo clinched the point for the Bulls.

Entering singles play with a 1-0 lead, No. 121 Chase Ferguson (Melbourne, Australia) quickly earned USF's second point of the match with a premiere court win, 6-3, 6-0, against Jason Legall. The sophomore has won seven of his last ten singles matchups.

Ivan Yatsuk (Minsk, Belarus) rebounded after a 2-6 first set loss. The sophomore picked up the pace and put South Florida ahead 3-0 after finishing 6-4 and 6-2 in the remaining sets.

Wojcik clinched the match for the Bulls and left with his first ranked win of the season over No. 58 Maxime Lapraille, 7-5, 6-2, on court two. Antonio Muniz-Hidalgo (Valencia, Spain) soon followed suit on the fourth court, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0, to continue USF's sweep.

The final courts resulted in straight-set victories: Bollipalli defeated Thomas Guy on the sixth court, 6-4, 6-3, and Pierre Luquet (Draguignan, France) took down Gerard Escandell on court three, 6-2, 6-4.

Quotable
Head coach Ashley Fisher on the win-filled weekend at FAU …

"Proud of the young men and the way they represented the University of South Florida this weekend. Really good day in terms of building and investing in the team and individuals. It started in doubles with guys wanting the ball and backing themselves and then the singles portion of the match was extremely impressive. Too many good things to capture in an article but the theme of competing and believing in each other really prevailed today. It's a nice feeling when you know and see the culture growing all the time. Guys are playing hard for each other and being willing to put it on the line regardless of the score."
