Bulls Sweep Lehigh in Match Dedicated to Late Teammate

TAMPA, MARCH 8, 2020 – The University of South Florida women's tennis team produced a phenomenal performance to get the 7-0 win against Lehigh University on Sunday.

Before the match, the program honored late teammate Elizabeth Jones with a few words from head coach Cristina Moros and a few players. The Bulls dedicated the match to Elizabeth and paid tribute to the Jones family during a bench dedication as well. Learn more about Elizabeth's time with the program HERE.

Following the emotional ceremony, freshman Grace Eland (Manchester, England) and sophomore Laura Pellicer (Gandia, Valencia, Spain) kicked things off with a strong doubles match win, 6-1. Senior Janvhi Clark (Tauranga, New Zealand) and freshman Margriet Timmermans (Bergen Op Zoom, Netherlands) came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Lehigh's Casey Zhong and Anshika Singh, 7-5, and clinch the doubles point for the Bulls.

The Bulls didn't take the pressure off from there. Clark picked up the first singles point in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Sophomore Selin Yaylali (Gainesville, Fla.), who made her first singles appearance this season, followed with a victory in straight sets. Junior Alexandria Mjos (Austin, Texas) then clinched the win for the Bulls by closing out court three in two sets. Seconds later, freshman Lucia Garrigues (Valencia, Spain) extended the Bulls' lead to five.

Even with South Florida already clinching the win, play still continued on courts one and two. Pellicer closed court one with a 6-2 win in the third set. After dropping the first set, sophomore Amelie Boy (Trianon, Mauritius) battled back to win the second set and tiebreaker to give South Florida the clean sweep against Lehigh.
