Women’s Soccer’s Martinez, Bessette Earn AAC Weekly Honors
TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 18, 2021 – University of South Florida women's soccer has a pair of honorees earn weekly honors from the American Athletic Conference.
Sydney Martinez was named AAC Goalkeeper of the Week, while
Vivianne Bessette was named AAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Martinez (Rincon, Ga.) earned her first Goalkeeper of the Week nod of the season after posting her 20
th career shutout in a 1-0 double-overtime victory over a ranked Memphis team. She made six saves, her fifth time this season posting five-or-more stops in net. She now sits only four shutouts behind Katarina Elliott, who posted 24 between 2014-17.
Bessette (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) also received her first Defensive Player of the Week honor of the year. She played in all 105 minutes against the Tigers, helping in the shutout effort while also limiting the Memphis attack to six shots on goal and one corner kick.
Katie Kitching (Bedale, England) was also named to the AAC Honor Roll. She scored the game-winning goal in the 105th minute against Memphis.
USF plays in its last regular season game at home on Thursday as Cincinnati visits Corbett Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

The USF women's soccer team has posted eight consecutive seasons of 10-plus wins and nine in the last 10 years under head coach Denise Schilte-Brown. The Bulls made their first NCAA tournament appearance in 2010 and returned in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. South Florida has won four consecutive conference championships, earning the tournament title in 2017, 2019 and 2020 as well as the regular-season title in 2018 and 2020. The program had its first draft pick and second-highest pick in USF Athletics history with Evelyne Viens being taken with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NWSL Draft by Sky Blue FC, now Gotham FC.
