Martinez Named American Athletic Goalkeeper of the Week

TAMPA, Fla., March 1, 2021 – University of South Florida junior goalkeeper Sydney Martinez was selected as the American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

"Sydney has been great in net for us to start this season," head coach Denise Schilte-Brown said. "Starting with three consecutive shutouts is not an easy task, and I think it shows her skills as a goalkeeper and our collective skills defensively that she's been able to have three straight clean sheets."

Martinez has opened the season with three consecutive clean sheets in net for the Bulls, including a three-save shutout last Saturday against the Florida Gators. Martinez has also posted a shutout against Temple and a one-save clean sheet against Florida Atlantic.

The Bulls are one of 17 teams in NCAA Division I that have played a game and have not allowed a goal. Additionally, they're one of four teams that has played at least three games and have not allowed a goal.

This is the first time in program history that the team has started with three shutout efforts. The Bulls are back in action for a conference matchup on the road in Greenville, N.C. against East Carolina. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
