MIAMI, Fla., March 20, 2021 – The University of South Florida men's tennis team fell to No. 50 Miami on Saturday, 3-4. After dropping the doubles point, the Bulls failed to secure the four singles courts needed to clinch the win over the Canes.
No. 21
Rithvik Bollipalli (Hyderabad, India) and
Jakub Wojcik (Delray Beach, Fla.) suffered a ranked loss to No. 22 Franco Aubone and Benjamin Hannestad, 3-6. Despite a strong push from
Alvin Tudorica (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) and
Ivan Yatsuk (Minsk, Belarus) on court three, No. 38
Chase Ferguson (Melbourne, Austrailia) and
Pierre Luquet (Draguignan, France) dropped their set to Adria Soriano Barrera and Oren Vasser, 3-6.
During singles play, Wojcik defeated Bojan Jankulovski in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Before the additional two points from USF were scored, Miami clinched the match on courts one, four, and six. To shorten the deficit, Yatsuk came back to force three sets in his 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 win over Hannestad. The final point was scored from Sergio Gomez-Montesa's (Valencia, Spain) 7-6, 4-6, 1(10-5) contest against Aubone.
Quotable
Head coach Ashley Fisher on today's loss...
"Credit to Miami for playing in a hungry desperate fashion that coupled with their skill was too good for us. I'm disappointed in myself for having a career as a professional doubles player and not doing a good job of coaching doubles. We will focus this week on doubles and committing to our identity as players, and the great about our schedule is there are always opportunities around the corner."
