No. 14 USF Wins at Least a Share of American Athletic Conference Regular Season Title
April 04, 2021 | Women's Soccer
TAMPA, Fla., April 3, 2021 – The No. 14/21 University of South Florida women's soccer team earned at least a share of the Regular-Season American Athletic Conference Championship and the hosting rights for the conference tournament with a 2-1 win over No. 14 Memphis on Saturday night.
Regardless of the outcome of next weekend's matches, USF (7-0-1, 6-0-0 AAC) will host the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed and holds at least part of the conference title. With a win next week, USF would solely hold the title.
Katie Kitching (Bedale, England) got the Bulls off to a quick start, scoring in the ninth minute off of a long ball from Sydny Nasello (Land O' Lakes, Fla.). Soon after, Nasello extended the lead for South Florida with her fourth goal on the season.
Memphis responded with their lone goal of the game in the 35th minute. Grace Stordy scored to cut USF's lead at halftime to 2-1.
While both teams had opportunities in the second half, neither team was able to find the back of the net, giving the Bulls the victory.
Quotable
Head coach Denise Schilte-Brown on today's game…
"I'm really proud of the team. It was a really tough game. Memphis is a hard team to play against. They really try to be disruptive and change the flow of our game. It's always really competitive and entertaining. I thought we played really well in the beginning of the game. We controlled the game. We probably should've scored more goals early but we didn't and we let them back in. Then we lost control of the game a little bit and it was a battle. I'm proud of the team because we won the battle but it wasn't the style that we wanted to play in the end."
