USF Women’s Soccer’s Nasello, Martinez Named All-Americans

TAMPA, Fla. May 13, 2021 – University of South Florida women's soccer juniors Sydny Nasello and Sydney Martinez were selected as 2020 United Soccer Coaches All-Americans, the organization announced on Thursday. Nasello earned first-team All-America honors while Martinez was chosen as a second-team All-American.

"Martinez and Nasello were phenomenal for us this season," head coach Denise Schilte-Brown said. "We're so proud of them. Everyone on the team sacrificed and excelled this season which allowed the program to be consistently recognized on a national scale. Martinez and Nasello have both worked so hard for the last three years to reach this point and they truly deserve the recognition."

Named the 2020 American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Nasello led the conference in both goals (6), assists (5), and points (17). Her four game-winners in the COVID-delayed 2020 season ranked 10th in the country and she was tied for the national lead with a perfect penalty-kick percentage.

Nasello was named AAC Offensive Player of the Week three times during the year and earned an honorable mention to TopDrawerSoccer's Team of the Week on Feb. 9. A brace in the AAC Championship helped her earn the title of the tournament's Most Outstanding Offensive Player.

Martinez was nearly unbeatable as USF's goalkeeper during the 2020 campaign, posting a 0.453 goals-against average, which ranks 13th in the nation, and 0.857 save percentage, which ranks 24th among DI goalkeepers. Her lockdown performances in the regular season helped her earn AAC Goalkeeper of the Year honors and was named AAC Goalkeeper of the Week three times during the year.

She tallied six solo shutouts, including a program-record five to begin the season, and added two more combined shutouts in which she played a majority of the minutes. She tallied nearly 171 minutes of shutout soccer in the AAC Tournament, en route to being named the tournament's Most Outstanding Defensive Player.

This is the first time USF has had two All-Americans in the same season. Both Nasello and Martinez earned their first All-America nod with the selection. Nasello is the lone first-team selection from The American and Martinez and Nasello represent two of the conference's three honorees.
