Bulls ranked inside top 25 in multiple postseason polls

TAMPA (July 1, 2021) – After a historic 2021 campaign in which the University of South Florida baseball team advanced to the program's first-ever NCAA Super Regional, the Bulls' success has garnered national attention in the form of multiple top 25 rankings among the various postseason polls.

Below are the five publications that have recognize USF in their 2021 final rankings.

The Bulls were unranked throughout the 2021 season before their magical postseason run began by winning the American Athletic Conference tournament championship to earn an NCAA Regional berth.

South Florida was assigned to the Gainesville Regional as the No. 4 seed and proceeded to beat host and nationally-ranked Florida and perennially powerhouse Miami on consecutive days to begin the tournament. The Bulls went on to defeat South Alabama for the Gainesville Regional championship to advance to their first-ever Super Regional.

USF then took on No. 2-nationally ranked Texas in the Austin Super Regional where the Bulls' season came to an end just two wins shy of reaching the College World Series in Omaha.

Notable Team Accomplishments

  • Won the program's first AAC Championship.
  • Won the team's first conference tournament title since 1995 (Metro Conference).
  • Appeared in the program's 14th NCAA Regional (second time under head coach Billy Mohl).
  • Became just the seventh regional No. 4 seed to reach a Super Regional.
  • Advanced to the program's first-ever NCAA Super Regional.
  • Recorded 30 wins for the first time since 2018.
  • Led the AAC in team ERA (3.23), WHIP (1.23), batting average against (.220) and hits allowed/9-innings (7.34).

Notable Individual Accomplishments

  • Jack Jasiak (Spring Hill) was named the American Pitcher of the Week once, while Drew Brutcher (Lakeland), Carmine Lane (Lake Placid) and Roberto Peña (Caracas, Venezuela) each earned Player of the Week honors during the season. 
  • Riley Hogan (Orlando) was named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll three times, Collin Sullivan (Randolph, Mass.) was tabbed twice, while Jasiak, Joaquin Monque (Weston) and Nelson Rivera (Toa Alto, Puerto Rico) were each honored once.
  • Lane (Lake Placid) and C. Sullivan (Randolph, Mass.) were both named to the AAC All-Conference Team.
  • Jasiak, Hogan, Lane, Daniel Cantu (Jacksonville), and Brad Lord (Crawfordville) were named to the AAC All-Tournament Team.
  • Cantu was named the American Athletic Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
  • Rivera, Matt Ruiz (Hialeah) and Jake Sullivan (Tampa) were named to the Gainesville Regional All-Tournament Team.
  • J. Sullivan was named the Gainesville Regional Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
  • Lane was named a Freshman All-American by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
  • Brutcher was named a Freshman All-American by Perfect Game USA/Rawlings.
  • Brutcher and Lane became the third set of teammates in program history to be named Freshman All-Americans, and the first since 2009.

About USF Baseball

The USF Baseball program played its first season in 1966 and is entering its 56th season in 2021. The Bulls have won 1,628 games entering the 2021 season and made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, including three since 2015. The Bulls have won four conference tournament titles (3 Sun Belt and 1 Metro) and had 126 all-conference selections. USF baseball players have been recognized with All-America honors 12 times, most recently with third baseman David Villar in 2018. Four players were selected in the 2018 MLB Draft, including the program's fourth first round selection in pitcher Shane McClanahan, who appeared in the 2020 World Series with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Bulls saw continued success in head coach Billy Mohl's first season in 2018, reaching 36 wins, advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time since 2012, and making the program's latest NCAA Tournament appearance while also achieving a ranking in multiple polls for the final two months of the season.
