Three Student-Athletes Earn Conference Academic Awards
IRVINE, Texas, July 7, 2021 – The American Athletic Conference named
Georgina Corrick (softball),
Albin Bergstrom (men's golf) and
Marina Barzaghi (sailing, at-large) as Scholar-Athletes of the Year for their specific sports, with Corrick also earning the overall title of the AAC's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Award winners are chosen by the conference FARs and receive a $2,000 postgraduate scholarship. Corrick is the first USF student-athlete to be named an overall Scholar-Athlete, while the trio of student-athletes are USF's first selections since the 2017-18 academic year.
Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) capped a remarkable 2021 season by helping the softball program reach its 16
th NCAA tournament appearance, aiding the team to the Gainesville regional finals. The junior was named an NFCA Third Team All-American and earned her third consecutive AAC Pitcher of the Year honor.
"
Georgina Corrick is the epitome of what college athletes should strive for," head coach
Ken Eriksen said. "To be known as one of the hardest workers in our athletic program, to be able to lead a team even when she is not on the field, and to excel in the classroom is why George is just beginning to pave her way to a successful future."
In the 2021 season, Corrick was the ace of Bulls' pitching staff, tossing a 0.98 ERA and a 24-9 record in 228.1 innings in the circle. She threw four no-hitters and 333 strikeouts throughout the campaign and led the nation with 15 shutouts during the season.
In the classroom, Corrick graduated in the spring semester with a degree in marine biology. The 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-American has been named to the American All-Academic team every season on campus and is a regular addition to the USF Athletics Honor Roll. The Great Britain National Team member was voted as a 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-District team member last week, and is eligible to repeat as an Academic All-American later this month.
Bergstrom was a standout not only in the classroom, but on the golf course during the 2020-21 campaign. The redshirt sophomore won the 2021 AAC individual championship and helped lead the Bulls to the team conference championship while USF advanced to its eighth straight NCAA Regional. Bergstrom was a unanimous All-Conference selection for his efforts.
"Albin is a competitor who wants to win in everything he does, and that shows in his results on the golf course and in the classroom," said head coach
Steve Bradley. "This is great recognition for his hard work. We are very proud of him and his representation of our golf program and USF Athletics."
Bergstrom was also named to the 2021 PING All-Southeast Region Team and tabbed the USF Male Student-Athlete of the Year by the Sports Club of Tampa Bay. Over nine outings in the spring of 2021, Bergstrom led the Bulls in scoring average (70.52), rounds of par or better (20), top-25 finishes (7) and top-10 finishes (3).
Bergstrom has been named to the American All-Academic Team every season and was a 2020 Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar.
Barzaghi's boat's fourth place finish at the SAISA Conference Championships in April aided USF's third place finish at the event, which qualified three of South Florida's boats for the Women's National Championship, where she helped the team finish in 13
th.
"
Marina Barzaghi exemplifies the best in student-athletes," head coach
Allison Jolly said. "She graduated from a rigorous Bachelor of Science in Nursing program with a competitive GPA while competing on the nationally ranked USF sailing team. She was USF's starter for all four years, competing at every national championship. But even more important is what cannot be quantified; Marina's indomitable spirit, her commitment to the team, and her grace in the face of the pressures of academics and competition."
Barzaghi graduated with her degree in spring 2021 and has regularly been included on the USF Athletics Honor Roll.
