TULSA, Okla., Sept. 24, 2021 – The University of South Florida women's soccer team remained perfect in both conference and road play with a 1-0 victory over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Friday Night.
Madeleine Penman-Derstine (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) scored the game-winner with only 74 seconds remaining in the second overtime period.
Both teams battled through regulation without breaking through. After 90 minutes of play, each side had recorded four shots on goal, however USF had a 11-8 edge in shot attempts.
The Bulls picked up the pressure in overtime. In the first extra frame, South Florida tallied a 3-0 shot advantage with one shot from
Sydny Nasello (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) striking the crossbar in the 97
th minute.
After continuing its offensive pressure into the second overtime period, the Bulls had an opportunity in the 109
th minute. After a yellow card on Tulsa's Megan Nielsen gave USF an indirect chance,
Vivianne Bessette (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) sent the free kick to Penman-Derstine, who had her first shot saved by Raegan Beeding. On the rebound, the freshman forward sent the ball into the net to get the double-overtime victory.
Notables
- USF continued its streak of games with 20-or-more shot attempts. The Bulls have taken 20-plus shots in seven-of-ten games this season and in each of the last three contests.
- The Bulls have played in four matches that have gone to OT, and boast a 3-0-1 record in those games.
- South Florida's last loss in a true road contest came in the 2019 NCAA tournament against Florida State (Nov. 24, 2019). Since then, they've posted a 6-0-2 record in away contests.
- USF extended its undefeated streak in games against conference opponents to 13 games.
- Sydney Martinez (Rincon, Ga.) posted her 19th solo shutout in net. She currently is tied for 21st in NCAA Division I among active players in the category.
