ATHENS, Ga. (Jan. 30, 2022) – The University of South Florida men's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2022 spring season with a hard-fought 4-2 win over Virginia Tech on Sunday during day one of the ITA Weekend Kickoff at the University of Georgia.

The Bulls, who improve to 1-1 on the year, will now face the winner of No. 7 Georgia and VCU on Monday at 2 p.m.

South Florida barreled its way to the doubles point with Sergio Gomez-Montesa and
Alvin Tudorica taking court three, 6-1, and
Chase Ferguson and
Antonio Muniz handing the Hokies a 6-4 defeat on court two.

In singles,
Bruno Oliveira had a tough first set in a win but came back and dominated the second set and take court four, 7-6, 6-1, and put the Bulls up, 2-1. Â Â Â

After South Florida fell on court one, 6-4, 7-6,
Ivan Yatsuk gave the Bulls a 3-1 edge with his 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win on court two.

Virginia Tech made things interesting, cutting the South Florida advantage to 3-2 with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win on court three, but
Alvin Tudorica secured the Bulls' victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court six.

South Florida, along with Georgia and VCU are competing for one of 16 spots in the 2022 ITA National Men's Indoor Championship, which takes place Feb. 18-22 in Seattle, Washington.

South Florida will close out its season-opening weekend trip to the Peach State when it faces the winner of No. 7 Georgia/VCU on Monday at 2 p.m. The Bulls return home to the Varsity Tennis Courts for its home-opener when it takes on Florida Atlantic on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 10 a.m. and then North Florida at 2:30 p.m. South Florida will close out the three-match homestand on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 1:30 p.m. against No. 19 Texas A&M.
