USF Men's Tennis Has Strong Showing at ITA Southeast Regionals

TAMPA (Oct. 24, 2022) – The University of South Florida men's tennis team took part in its second event of the Fall season this past weekend competing in the ITA Southeast Regional at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center at Florida State University in Tallahassee and the Bulls turned in another strong performance against some of the top programs in the region.
 
South Florida recorded 10 wins in the three-day event and had three players advance to the Round of 16 in singles for the first time, in addition to Georgia transfer Erik Grevelius advancing to the regional quarterfinals.
 
In doubles, after a first-round bye, the Bulls' tandem of Alvin Tudorica and Bruno Oliveira defeated Juan Jose Rodriguez and Lucas Olivier of Stetson, 8-2, before advancing to the double's quarterfinals with an 8-4 win over Harvey Conway and Raul Garcia (Kennesaw State), 8-4, in the Round of 16. Tudorica and Oliveira fell in the quarters, 8-4, to the runners-up and top-seeded duo of Trent Bryde and Philip Henning of Georgia.
 
In singles play, Grevelius accounted for three of South Florida's 10 wins, posting a 3-1 record in singles for the weekend en route to the quarterfinals. Grevelius defeated Lukas Greif of Florida, 7-6(5), 6-4, in the first round, No. 1-seeded Loris Pourroy of Florida State, 6-2, 7-5, in the Round of 32, and Lucas Olivier of Stetson, 6-2, 6-3, to advance to the final eight. Grevelius dropped his quarterfinal match to eventual champion Blake Croyder of Georgia, 6-3, 6-2.
 
Alvin Tudorica also advanced to the Round of 16 with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 win over Nicolas Jadoun of Florida Atlantic and a victory in the Round of 32 over Florida's Will Grant, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.
 
Joining Grevelius and Tudorica in the Round of 16 was Davide Tortora. Tortora, a transfer from Mississippi State, pulled out a come-from-behind win over Thomas Paulsell of Georgia, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(10) in his first singles competition of the weekend and then took down Marcus McDaniel of Georgia Tech in a nail-biter, 7-5, 7-5.
 
After a 1-6, 3-6 setback in the first round, Bruno Oliveira advanced to the Round of 16 in the consolation bracket with a 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 win over Maks Silagy Florida State.    
 
UP NEXT
South Florida's next scheduled fall event will be at the Gator Fall Invitational at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Nov. 4-6.
